A moderate westerly wave is expected to enter in upper regions of Pakistan. This weather system is forecast to initiate across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa starting today, extending to Gilgit-Baltistan by tomorrow. During this period, widespread rain and wind-thunderstorms are anticipated, with isolated heavy falls likely in mountainous catchments. The weather patterns significantly elevates the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), debris flow, and flash flooding vulnerable areas especially in Swat, lower Chitral, Dir, Upper Hazara, Kohistan, Hoper, Ghulkin, Shishper, Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar, Ghanche, Shigar, and Astore
- Residents in glaciated valleys are advised to observer the following safety measures.
- Avoid proximity to riverbanks and stream beds during rainfall. • Monitor local nullahs for sudden changes in watercolor (muddiness) or unusual sounds (grinding rocks)
- Secure livestock and essentials in higher safe grounds
- Coordinate closely with community Based Disaster Risk Management Committees (CBDRMCs)
- The Disaster Management authorities ensure 24/7 alertness and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation.
- Maintain active communication links with technical focal persons in remote valleys.
- Disseminate this alert via SMS, social media.
